SAMPLE DESIGN AND SAMPLING WEIGHTS FOR THE "VIOLENCE IN THE EDUCATION SYSTEM" STUDY

Ronit Nirel and Peter Zalzman

March 1999

ABSTRACT

The population of the "Violence in the Education System" study includes all students in grades four to eleven in the secular and religious national supervision, in the Jewish and Arab sectors. A stratified two-stage sample was drawn for a sampling frame provided by the Education Ministry. Stratification variables included education stage (elementary, junior high and high schools), supervision (secular or religious), sector (Jewish or Arab) and districts. Schools in each stratum were drawn with probability proportional to size, and within each school, one class of each grade was drawn at random. All students in a chosen class were interviewed. Interviews were carried out in two waves, each including more than 230 schools and more than 16,000 students.

The report (in Hebrew) describes the sampling frame, sample design and method of determining the sampling weights. A separate report presents an analysis of the sampling errors.
